1. Size
The Buddy comes in 2 basic sizes both of which can be expanded with the PowerStick option. The smaller machines cutting area is 32” x 24” x 5”. The larger machine has a 48” x 32” x 5” cutting area. Using an optional PowerStick either machine can have the 24” axis can increased up to 144” in length, depending which PowerStick length is deployed.

2. Drive System
The Buddy is available with two drive systems; PRSstandard or PRSalpha.
From a technical standpoint the PRSstandard tools use "open loop" stepper motors with low-backlash gearheads. This is a proven system that has become the leading affordable CNC control for shops around the world. The PRSstandard control system utilizes the acclaimed Geckodrive stepper drivers and provides fast, smooth cuts at a good resolution.
While these PRSstandard CNC tools offer good performance, better than other entry level CNCs, they do NOT have the performance of our PRSalpha control.
PRSalpha ShopBots are several times faster than the PRSstandard version and other entry level CNC tools. The advanced "closed-loop" PRSalpha motors add considerable reliability to heavy production operations. For serious production work or performance-oriented machining, the ShopBot PRSalpha offers the greatest value in affordable production CNC. With rapid transit speed of 1,500 inches per minute and cutting speed of up to 600 inches per minute (depending on cutter and material). These ShopBots utilize the advanced technology of Vexta, which combine the power and speed advantages of stepper motors with the feedback advantages of servos - providing high-performance CNC cutting, drilling, carving, and machining. Fast, closed-loop alphaStep Vexta motors - fitted with low-backlash, tapered-hob gear heads - on all three axes (two on the X axis) that monitor the motor shaft to detect and correct any loss of synchronicity between signal and motion

3. Spindles/Routers
 |
There are two main types of tool drive available for the Buddy. Either a standard wood-router; the Porter Cable or the more high performance HSD spindles in two power levels. The spindles run much quieter than the Porter Cable router and have a much longer life. |

4. Cutting Tools
 |
We would strongly recommend purchase of our starter bit set. These are a selection of top quality (Onsrud made) cutting tools. The set includes 1 1/4in planing bit, V-bit, straight bits, upcut and downcut spiral bits, roundnose tapered bit. This selection gives you a good start for basic 2D routing, 3D carving and also surfacing your table. The Get Carving Quickly projects that are included with your Buddy utilize tools from this bit set. |

5. Vacuum Systems
| For dust collection ShopBot recommends the Fein turbo III, this is a high performance shop-vac for clean up and removal of chips.

6. PowerStick
The PowerStick is a patent pending invention which allows expansion of the Buddy's short axis (24 inch) to longer lengths. If your Buddy came with an aluminum table, you will need a roller guide kit ($250.00) in addition to the PowerStick. The PowerStick with work piece attached easily slides into the machine and is then locked into place with the lever. It is available in 3 lengths either 4’ (48”), 8’ (96”) or 12’ (144”). Depending on the type of work and material you plan to work with on your Buddy we would also recommend considering the optional Outfeed system to support longer parts being carved with the PowerStick.

7. Outfeed Rollers
For use with the PowerStick to help support the parts of a long job which is not currently being carved.

8. Caster System
Optional caster wheels can be raised and lowered to allow the Buddy to be rolled around the shop to a new position.

9. 3D Probe Scanner
 |
Make a copy of an object in 3D with our optional digital touch probe. This attaches in place of your router bit in the router collet. Place the object you want to copy on the ShopBot table and run the "Copy Machine" tool in the ShopBot Control Software. You can duplicate an existing 3D shape or piece of decorative trim or molding. |

10. Software
All machines are supplied with the ShopBot Control software, PartWorks and PartWorks 3D (ShopBot’s branded version of the industry renowned VCarve Pro and Cut3D) along with our Get Carving Quickly package of projects. This will satisfy the majority of users and allow you to cut all the projects you can imagine. A demo version of VCarve Pro and Cut3D which are the equivalent to PartWorks and PartWorks 3D can be downloaded from Vectric’s website here: http://www.vectric.com/WebSite/Vectric/products/download.htm
Although our standard software has a lot a 3D capability when utilizing 3D clipart if you wanted to model your own 3D components you would need to consider a software package like ArtCAM Pro, you can read more about this software here http://www.artcam.com

Vector Art are industry leaders in the supply of high quality ready to use 2D clipart. Their 3 Mega collections comprise of around 5000 images each and make a great resource as art which can be cut out of the box or to use as components in a more complex layout.

13. 3D Clip Art
Vector Art 3D has a library of 3D computer models ready to be carved on a ShopBot tool. Their artwork takes the cost and complexity out of producing beautiful carved parts with your machine. The files are compatible with PartWorks 3D, ArtCAM pro and many others and are available from ShopBot in 5 different collections or as a bundle which comprises all the collections.

14. Training
We offer training at the ShopBot facility which covers the basics of the control software, PartWorks and Partworks 3D along with the setup and maintenance of your machine and a variety of handy tips and tricks to make you more productive or we can send one of our trained technicians to your facility to setup the machine and provide you with customized training on the machine and software.

15. Shipping
The Buddy is shipped pre-assembled in a crate and will require lift-gate service if you do not have access to a fork-lift truck when the crate is delivered.
